"Lars Stadig was a pioneer in the Swedish migration to northern Maine. His farm, claimed under the Homestead Laws, consisted of 100 acres of mostly uncleared land.
Lars was a large and very strong man, and equally versatile. After becoming well established on his farm, he soon proved to be a leader in the community, establishing and improving services needed by the early settlers. He rapidly became proficient in use of the English language and served as translator for the community. One year there was a drought that created a shortage of flour, and being resourceful and self-sufficient, Lars took a load of grain successively to Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Limestone and finally to Grand Falls on the St. John River to find someone who would grind it into flour. Not being successful, he returned home with the grain. On the way, he picked up a granite stone. He scored the stone and made it into a mill-stone that was put to use by neighbors, day and night. this stone is now located in the New Sweden Museum, along with a sewing machine brought from Sweden by his wife, Kerstin.
From Yellow Birch, Lars made the first Swedish Rift Skis in this country. (Compiler's note: Rift skis were a precurser to our modern cross-country skis. They were quite long compared to modern skis, and were of un-equal length. One was used as a gliding ski, and the shorter one for pushing.) In the first year he was in the United States, Lars made a pair of skis for President Theodore Roosevelt. Lar's grandson Walter continued the manufacture of Swedish rift skis at a mill that he built in Soldier Pond, Maine. He sent a pair to the War Department in Washington, D.C., along with suggestions for testing, hoping thereby to promote business. He received a reply stating that the skis had been tested as suggested, together with additional tests. They were found to be the most superior skis the department had ever tested, but owing to the fact that they were made of Yellow Birch, rather than Hickory, the offer was turned down. Lars did not take part in skiing competitions as such, but he reportedly had no difficulty in beating the man who was the recognized area champion.
As an example of his extraordinary strength, it was reported that one day Lars was in the mill making ready for installation of a new drive shaft. Six men carried the heavy shaft in with difficulty, and laid it in the vicinity where it was to be installed. When they were ready for it, Lars casually got astride the shaft, raised it between his knees, and swung it into position."

"After homesteading on a farm on the West Jemtland Road in New Sweden, Carl and his family moved to Clermont Florida for health reasons. Carl helped construct the First Baptist Church building in New Sweden, where he was a member and Deacon. In Florida, he was a member and Deacon of the Grace Baptist Church until his death. Carl experienced two pioneerings. As a child, he remembered his father clearing the woods in Maine and building a small log cabin, with all land clearing done by hand. Later, a frame house was built and more land cleared. Then, at age 55, he began again in the woods of Florida, clearing land by hand, planting orange trees, living first in a small frame building eighteen feet square, and later building a nice frame house. He lived to see three sons return from service in World War II."

"Olof went into the lumber mill business in St. Francis, Maine, with a Charles Jones. The mill was known as the Jones & Stadig mill, and was located on the St. John River. Later, Olof sold his interest to Jones and started his own mill across the St. John River at the mouth of the St. Francis River, in New Brunswick, Canada. In 1910, an embargo was put on the shipment of lumber and shingles into Maine, putting this mill out of business. Olof and his sons started a machine shop in St. Francis, Maine. Olof was also the judge in St. Francis. He never favored prohibition."

"Francis was an outstanding mechanic in the early days of automobiling. Because of the snow and the cold winters in northern Maine, which didn't allow for comfortable motoring, he resorted to converting autos into snowmobiles by removing the front wheels and replacing them with runners and altering the propulsion to a crawler type, such as the system used on World War 1 tanks. He was employed as a log-hauler operator and maintenance mechanic, as well as donkey engine operator on pile drivers that were used so much in the log driving operations on the St. John, St. Francis, Allagash and other rivers and streams. Excessive exposure to the elements by that type of employment probably caused his demise at an early age."

"John went into the mill business, following in the steps of his brother Olof. In 1901, he and Neal McLean bought the Connors, New Brunswick shingle mill and operated it until 1910, when it was closed due to the embargo imposed on shipments into the U.S. This mill burned down in the summer of 1912. For the winters of 1910 through 1912, John hired a mill at St. Louis du Ha-Ha, Quebec. Among his employees were Olof's eldest son Francis, and Martha's brother Otto Sodergren.
In 1913, John built a long-lumber mill in the 2nd range back from the St. John River, in New Brunswick. One day John returned home and found a French Indian stealing his recently purchased firewood. He asked the Indian to unload the wood from his sled. Upon refusal, John jumped onto the sled, unloaded the Indian, and gave him quite a beating. Then he unloaded the wood. Apparently, the Indian had it in for John after that episode. Later, when John happened to be staying at the Indian's camp, the Indian came in thoroughly intoxicated. The Indian came into the bedroom where John was and swung his axe down on the bed, trying to kill him. But in the meantime, John had leaped out of bed!
One winter night, in 1917, the same Indian tried to burn down John's mill. John's son Melvin, who was close by, went down to the mill on a security check, having had a premonition that something was wrong, but could find nothing. He returned to his home and stood in the doorway listening for the sleigh bells of his brother, who was due to return from a trip. As he stood there, he saw fire starting to pour out of the mill. With quick action, the fire was promptly put out. However, in 1922, the Indian finally succeeded in burning down the mill. John then went to Massachusetts for four years, where he did carpenter work. He returned to Connors, where he farmed and did mill work until he died. He also sold insurance, representing several companies.".

"Clinton retired from the U.S. Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, where he worked for 25 years building submarines. He was a Helper, Shipfitter, Leadingman, Boilermaker, Draftsman, and finally a Ship Scheduler, from which position he was the first ever to retire. Having a coronary was his disabling cause. Along with his wife, he operated a campground and mobile home park at Wells, Maine until June 1969, when a second coronary forced him to sell the business to his stepson Cecil E. Briggs, Jr.
He enjoyed his membership in Masonic Lodges, including Blue, Royal Arch, Knights Templar, Consistory, and Shrine; and attended Methodist church. Of course, his hobby was always genealogy, which developed through his publication of the Stadig newsletter."

She probably retired about June 1974, having kept that fact secret. May remained an enigma to the end. It was only after her death that anyone had an inkling of the unbelievable amount of her contributions to charities, churches and religious causes, although her generosity was realized to the extent that she never appeared for a visit without a gift - and her gifts contained so many pleasant surprises! She must have been a confused and often unhappy child, since she was only three when her mother died. Yet, she was fun-loving and a born tease. The May Stadig Memorial Fund was established in her memory."

"Esaias was commonly known as 'Cy'. In his youth, together with his brother Albert, he played in the New Sweden band. In 1909, he moved to Cambridge, MA. Being a very fine carpenter, he did carpentry and contracting work. He built many homes in the Boston area. Also, he taught carpentry at Boston Trade School, and taught his nephews George and Melvin. He was an expert at using the carpenter's square for solving mathematical problems. He retired to Tideview Estates, Ellenton, Florida at the age of 82 and lived to the age of 93. He was the last survivor of his family."

"As a young man, Albert played in the New Sweden, Maine band, along with his brother Cy. Brother John also played in the same band but at an earlier date. Albert established his residence in Dover, New Hampshire, where he farmed for a few years, and after turning back to carpentering, did small farming for family use. He was a cabinet maker, and master of all three trades; builder, carpenter, and cabinet maker. He performed all the various steps from the drawing of blueprints to the finished work. He was a pioneer in establishing trailer parks, putting one in the Soldier Pond area. Also, among other accomplishments, he invented the rotary snow plow. He sold this invention to Fairbanks, Morse & Co. for $10,000. He used the final $1,000 of this money to buy his wife a mink coat! He served in World War I, along with his three brothers."

During the twenties, he was a high-performance car salesman, winning several awards. When one brand became hard to get, he quickly switched to another. When the depression came and it became difficult to sell and collect, he took a farm near St. Francis as settlement on a sale, and changed his occupation to cutting pulp to get the money back. Proving satisfactory, he continued this occupation. In 1943, he moved to Harmony, Maine. He died in a fire of unknown origin that destroyed the house where he was sleeping, nearby to where his horses were stabled."

She certainly was devoted to her family, and left no stones unturned in her attempts at giving to others. I well remember my childhood days when we unwrapped our Christmas presents - there were always pleasant surprises in her gifts to each and every one of us. Every fall she had opportunities to earn extra money picking potatoes at 6 cents a barrel, or more, thus adding to her spending money. Her later years, after the start of World War II, were spent in Natick, Massachusetts, where she worked at various jobs, holding her small family together until Richard went into the service. I was fortunate enough to have been with her at V.J. Day, ending the war. You must know that we were all so thrilled and HAPPY that it was all over.".

"Raymond worked in the sawmills until his marriage, when he entered the U.S. Army and was trained at Camp Devens. After the armistice, he moved to Berlin, New Hampshire, where he was employed as a collander grinder at a papermill, until 1923. He then moved to Cochituate, Massachusetts. for the rest of his life he was carpentering, contracting and developing housing developments known as "Honeymoon Homes" in North Weymouth and East Braintree, Massachusetts. He lived in Wollaston at the time of his death. During his teen years he cut and hauled firewood to a neighbor, for which he received in trade a violin. Having studied music with a Mr. Sankey, he was able to become quite proficient with the fiddle, entertaining himself and many others with his music. His father in law and brother in law were also good fiddle players, so there certainly had to be many evenings of fun!
Raymond was a devoted Legionnaire, and enjoyed his trip to their national conventioni in Milwaukee. I also heard that he did have an application in for membership in a Masonic Lodge at the time of his death. At that time he was Vice-Commander of his American Legion Post. He was very proud of his family of seven, especially the youngest, Sharlene, then only 5 months old. We were all shocked and grieved when we lost this stalwart family member!"

"Maynard 'fired' on the Boston & Maine Railroad for quite a number of years during the early twenties and some in later years, but because of lack of seniority, was often getting 'bumped' off. He worked as a carpenter most of his life, with some time at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, in Kittery, Maine. He quit the shipyard when his father went back to Connors, New Brunswick, in 1943, after a few months of trying to find employment. Maynard stayed with mother until after Dad's death in June of 1944. He was always a great entertainer around the campfires because he could recite poems in the French patois way that made it so entertaining."

"Kermit was a marine during World War II, and had many experiences as such. He told of hiding from certain death among some of the Japanese held islands. Other experiences were almost unbelievable, such as catching a live hand grenade thrown at him by the enemy, and throwing it back. He had bouts with malaria, but managed to avoid many bad after effects. He went into the sawmill business in Soldier Pond by building an elaborate Cedar mill, only to find out that he was allergic to cedar. After several other ventures, he left the Soldier Pond area and moved to St. Cloud, Florida, where he worked as a builder. "Bennett was stationed in Burma during World War II, where he met for the first time his cousin Wilbert one day at mail call. After the war, he entered into the lumber manufacturing business with a vim. However, a bout with Malaria was followed by Diabetes, forcing him to take precautions with his body. Nevertheless, his enthusiasm for any project was overwhelming. He lumbered on virgin timber forested land west of Ashland, Maine, which was quite profitable. He built a mill in Presque Isle, and sold lumber in that area. Eventually, he sold this mill to the Sam Collins Co., of Caribou, and moved to Dayville, Connecticut, where he built a trailer park and a few houses. He was quite adept at finding opportunities at auctions, where one time he bought a whole truck load of broom handles. Demerise asked him what he was going to do with them. He said he'd sell them, and he did - to a plant nursery, for staking plants."

He was the son of Joseph C.M. and Aurore Mary (Oakes) Stadig. He started school in New Brunswick and at age 12 moved to the United States with his family and settled in Eliot, Maine, where he was raised and continued his education, including attending Eliot High School. In 1958 he married his loving wife of 49 years, Lavern Gourley. Together they made a home in Hampton while Ron worked for Jimmy Canty at Fisherman's Pier. A time later, Ron joined with his brother to operate the Seagull Diner in Kittery for many years, after the diner became the Fisherman's Pier, Ron stayed on for a time before he and his wife began the Bayside Restaurant in Greenland, which they owned and operated for many years. Toward the end of his full-time working career they began to transform their summer home at Great East lake, where so many family and friends had enjoyed time together, into a year-round retirement home. For the next 10 years they enjoyed the solitude and beauty of Great East lake full time, always opening their home up to all for an enjoyable and memorable time. From a very musical family, Ron could often be heard playing his guitar and enjoying country music, blue grass music or Elvis.
After retirement Ron still enjoyed time working with his brother at Bosn's Landing in York for many years.
He enjoyed sports, especially the Red Sox and the Patriots, the outdoors was especially enjoyable to him, more so when the activities included his family, fishing, snow sledding and gardening. He enjoyed trips to Florida in his motor home and loved to visit fairs and bluegrass festivals. He enjoyed membership in the Seacoast Dart league.
